Which specialist performs mastectomy?

A mastectomy removes breast tissue. The surgical oncologist reviews examination findings, imaging, biopsy results, tumour features and your preferences before discussing the extent of surgery.

A plastic surgeon may perform immediate or delayed reconstruction, or discuss alternatives such as an external prosthesis. A pathologist examines the removed tissue, while medical and radiation oncologists advise about treatment around the operation.

Ask whether the operation will remove one or both breasts, whether the nipple or skin can be preserved, and whether lymph nodes need assessment. Discuss reconstruction before surgery if that matters to you, because it can affect the surgical plan.

Share your medicines, allergies, previous anaesthesia problems and any concerns about body image or recovery. Request clear instructions about drains, arm movement, wound care and follow-up appointments.

After surgery, contact the team for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever, worsening pain or a drain that stops working. Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting or heavy bleeding.
