Lymphoedema therapy aims to manage fluid swelling and improve comfort and function. A specialist physiotherapist may assess the affected area, teach skin care and exercises, use compression garments or bandaging, and provide manual lymphatic drainage when appropriate.

The therapist may coordinate with your oncologist, surgeon, nurse or physician, especially when swelling follows lymph-node surgery or radiotherapy. The plan can change as your symptoms, activity and treatment history change.

Record when the swelling began, where it appears and whether tightness, heaviness or reduced movement affects daily tasks. Bring details of cancer treatment, operations, medicines, skin problems and any compression garments you already use.

Ask the physiotherapist to demonstrate exercises and explain how to fit, wash and replace compression items. Protect the skin from cuts and burns, moisturise as advised and avoid starting strong massage or compression without an assessment.

Contact a clinician promptly if swelling becomes suddenly worse or the skin is hot, painful, red or leaking fluid. Fever, chills or feeling acutely unwell can indicate infection and needs urgent medical assessment. Sudden breathlessness or chest pain requires emergency help.
