A lung lobectomy removes one lobe of the lung rather than the whole lung. The thoracic surgeon considers the tumour's location, breathing tests, scans and overall health when deciding whether surgery is appropriate and which surgical approach may be used.

A pulmonologist may assess lung function, a radiologist reviews imaging, and a pathologist examines the removed lobe and lymph nodes. Medical and radiation oncologists may then discuss additional treatment based on the final findings.
