Which specialist performs low-dose CT lung screening?

A radiographer or CT technologist positions you and operates the scanner. A radiologist reviews the images and prepares the report. A pulmonologist, respiratory physician, or screening clinician may review your medical history, explain whether screening is appropriate, and arrange follow-up for findings that need attention. A screening scan is intended for people without symptoms who meet the programme’s eligibility criteria; it is different from diagnostic imaging ordered to investigate a new problem.

Share your smoking history, previous chest scans, lung conditions, allergies, and current medicines with the clinician arranging screening. Wear comfortable clothing and follow the imaging centre’s instructions. Tell the team if you may be pregnant, although the scan uses low-dose radiation and the staff will assess the situation. Ask how results will be delivered and who will explain an unexpected finding.

Do not use a screening appointment to delay assessment of coughing blood, new or worsening breathlessness, persistent chest pain, unexplained weight change, or a cough that does not settle. Contact a clinician promptly about these symptoms because they may need a diagnostic evaluation. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, collapse, or sudden chest pressure.
