Which specialist performs IV fluid therapy?

A clinician reviews symptoms, fluid intake, urine output, medical conditions and medicines before recommending a drip. A trained healthcare professional places a small cannula into a vein, connects the prescribed fluid and observes you during the infusion. The fluid type and amount depend on the reason for treatment, such as dehydration from vomiting, diarrhoea, heat exposure or difficulty drinking. IV treatment is not automatically needed for every episode of dehydration; assessment helps select oral fluids, intravenous fluids or another treatment.

Contact a general-practice clinic for an assessment when you can drink but need advice, or attend an urgent-care or emergency setting when symptoms are severe. Tell the clinician about kidney or heart problems, pregnancy, allergies, recent illness and current medicines. During the visit, mention how long symptoms have lasted and whether you are passing urine. Do not attempt to insert or manage an IV line yourself.

Seek urgent medical care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, trouble breathing, chest pain, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine or signs of shock. A serious infection, significant blood loss or another medical problem may need treatment beyond fluids. Emergency medicine clinicians can assess these concerns and arrange monitoring or specialist care when needed.

Ask what is causing the fluid loss, whether oral rehydration is suitable, which fluid is being considered, how you will be monitored and what symptoms should bring you back for review.
