Fine needle aspiration uses a slender needle to collect cells from a lump or nodule. For a thyroid nodule, an endocrinologist may carry out the procedure, sometimes using ultrasound to guide needle placement. Depending on the location, a radiologist, surgeon, or another appropriately trained clinician may perform it. A pathology specialist examines the cells and sends a report to the clinician managing your care.
