Dry needling uses a thin sterile needle to target selected muscle or soft-tissue areas, often when tight bands or trigger points are contributing to pain or restricted movement. The physiotherapist should review your symptoms, medical history, medicines, skin condition, and goals before deciding whether it fits your plan. The assessment also helps the clinician choose the body region, position, and other physiotherapy techniques that may accompany the session.

Ask whether the physiotherapist has specific training and regular experience with dry needling. Tell them about blood-thinning medicines, a bleeding tendency, pregnancy, diabetes, reduced immunity, allergies, or a fear of needles. Wear clothing that allows access to the area while preserving your comfort. After treatment, follow the movement and hydration advice provided, and report unusual soreness, bruising, or symptoms that do not settle.

Contact the treating clinic if redness, swelling, warmth, or tenderness around a needle site is increasing, or if you develop discharge or fever. Seek urgent medical care for trouble breathing, facial swelling, severe weakness, chest pain, or sudden neurological changes. If a needle was used near the chest and you develop sudden chest pain or shortness of breath, treat that as urgent.

Ask what problem the technique is intended to address, what other options are available, how many sessions may be considered, and what sensations are expected during recovery. You can also ask who will perform the procedure, how sterile equipment is handled, and which symptoms should prompt a call.
