DEXA, also called bone densitometry, uses low-dose X-rays to assess bone mineral density at selected sites, commonly the hip and lower spine. You lie still while the scanner passes over the body area being assessed. The imaging professional positions you and records the images; the report is then sent to the clinician who requested the scan or manages your bone health.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions and tell the team if you may be pregnant, recently had a contrast examination, or cannot lie comfortably. Wear practical clothing and bring relevant medication and fracture history. Ask who will explain the report and whether follow-up with your requesting clinician is needed.

A DEXA scan is usually arranged as a planned assessment, not an emergency test. Seek urgent care for a new severe injury, inability to bear weight, sudden loss of movement, or severe back pain with leg weakness or bladder or bowel changes.
