A dating scan is an early pregnancy ultrasound used to assess the pregnancy location, check for an embryo and cardiac activity when visible, and estimate gestational age. The specialist considers the scan findings alongside the date of your last menstrual period and your cycle pattern. An abdominal or internal ultrasound may be offered depending on how early the pregnancy is and which view is needed.

Maternal-fetal medicine focuses on pregnancy assessment and conditions that may affect the pregnant patient or fetus. A scan appointment may be arranged through your obstetric service, and the person who captures the images may be different from the clinician who explains them.

Bring information about your last menstrual period, cycle length, previous pregnancy dates, and any fertility treatment dates. Follow the imaging unit’s instructions about bladder preparation, because requirements vary with the type of scan. Tell the team about pain, bleeding, or uncertainty about your dates. Ask when the findings will be reviewed and whether a follow-up scan is needed if the pregnancy is too early to assess clearly.

Do not wait for a routine dating scan if you have severe one-sided abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, or marked weakness. Contact urgent maternity or emergency services, particularly when pregnancy has been confirmed or is possible. These symptoms need assessment for urgent causes; the purpose of a dating scan is not to triage a medical emergency.
