Which specialist performs custom orthotics?

Custom orthotics are foot supports shaped to your measurements and movement needs. A podiatrist reviews your walking pattern, footwear, joint motion, pressure points, pain and relevant medical history. The device may be intended to redistribute pressure, support a foot position or help manage a lower-limb loading problem. It is not the same as selecting a generic insole from a shelf.

Take the shoes you use most, note when symptoms appear and bring information about prior injuries, surgery or diabetes. The podiatrist may use a physical examination, walking assessment or foot measurements before recommending a device. Seek prompt care for a foot wound that is not healing, spreading redness, sudden swelling, a cold or pale foot, or new loss of sensation. If an orthotic causes a blister, persistent pressure or a change in walking pain, stop using it until the fitting is reviewed.

Ask what problem the orthotic is addressing, whether footwear changes or exercises could help, how long to build up wear, when the fit should be checked, and what symptoms mean the device needs adjustment.
