The radiologist uses ultrasound, mammography, CT, or another suitable imaging method to locate the area of concern. After cleaning and numbing the skin, a hollow needle removes several small cores of tissue. A pathologist examines the samples, while the radiologist documents the target and procedure details for the clinician coordinating your care.

Bring a list of medicines and tell the team about blood-thinning treatment, bleeding problems, allergies, pregnancy, or implanted devices. Wear clothing that allows access to the biopsy site and follow any instructions about eating or drinking. Plan to keep the area clean and avoid strenuous use of the biopsied body part for the period advised by your team.

Some tenderness, bruising, or a small dressing stain may follow the biopsy. Seek prompt advice for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing swelling, spreading redness, pus, fever, or worsening pain. Sudden breathing difficulty or faintness needs urgent medical attention.
