Which specialist performs chest x-ray?

The radiographer checks your details, explains the positioning, and asks you to stand or sit against the X-ray equipment. You may need to hold your breath briefly while images are taken from selected angles. The radiologist examines the images for findings involving the lungs, heart size, bones, and nearby structures, then sends a report to the clinician who requested the test. A general practitioner, emergency clinician, or respiratory specialist uses that report together with your symptoms and examination.

Usually, little preparation is needed. Wear clothing that allows the chest area to be positioned easily and remove jewellery or other metal objects when asked. Tell the radiographer if you may be pregnant. Follow any instructions from the requesting clinician, and ask when and how the report will be discussed. Do not wait for a routine X-ray appointment if you have severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, crushing chest pain, fainting, sudden confusion, or coughing blood. Use urgent medical services for these symptoms. Contact the requesting clinic if symptoms worsen while you are waiting or if the result has not been explained.
