Which specialist performs breast ultrasound?

Breast ultrasound uses a handheld probe and sound waves to create images of breast tissue. A sonographer may move the probe over the skin and record views of the area being assessed. A radiologist reviews the images and may also scan the area or guide the sonographer. The clinician who requested the test then uses the report alongside your examination and other results; an ultrasound image alone does not provide every diagnosis.

Wear clothing that allows the upper body to be examined and bring details of the area that prompted the referral. Tell the team about breast implants, a wound, or skin sensitivity. Arrange prompt clinical assessment for a new or changing lump, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or a breast that becomes red and swollen. These symptoms can have different causes, so the specialist may recommend examination, imaging, or sampling. After the scan, contact the service if the skin becomes painful or irritated where gel or pressure was applied.
