Which specialist performs BRCA genetic testing?

Short answer

A clinical geneticist or genetics specialist guides BRCA genetic testing and explains what the result may mean for you and your family.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What genetic care includes

Genetic care usually starts with a review of your personal and family history, including breast, ovarian, prostate, pancreatic, or related cancers. A genetics specialist discusses whether testing is appropriate, what genes are included, how a sample is collected, and the possible meanings of positive, negative, or uncertain findings.

Testing may be arranged through a genetics clinic, with a blood or saliva sample processed by a laboratory. The result is interpreted alongside your history rather than in isolation. A genetics specialist can discuss implications for relatives and whether additional cancer screening or risk-reduction conversations are relevant.

How to prepare

Before the appointment, write down relatives with cancer, the type of cancer, and their age when diagnosed if known. Bring pathology information or medical records when available, and ask relatives whether they have had genetic testing. Share your current medicines and any previous cancer screening.

Ask when and how results will be delivered, who can explain them, and whether a genetic counsellor is part of the service. Do not make surgery or screening decisions from a result summary alone; discuss the finding with the genetics and clinical team.

When to seek timely medical advice

Genetic testing is usually planned rather than an emergency procedure. Contact your care team promptly if you have a new breast or other concerning symptom, receive an unexpected result without an explanation, or need a time-sensitive cancer treatment decision. A genetics referral should not delay assessment of a new lump, unusual bleeding, persistent unexplained pain, or another red-flag symptom.

Questions for your doctor

Why is BRCA testing being offered in my situation? Which genes and test type are included? What could each kind of result mean? Should relatives consider testing? How might the result affect screening, treatment, or prevention discussions? Who will explain the result and arrange follow-up?

Questions people ask

Does a positive BRCA result diagnose cancer?

No. It identifies an inherited genetic finding associated with cancer risk; it does not by itself show that cancer is present.

Can family members use the result?

A result may help guide conversations about relatives, but each person needs individual advice about whether testing is suitable.
