Which specialist performs bone marrow biopsy?

Short answer

A haematologist commonly performs a bone marrow biopsy, with laboratory specialists examining the aspirate and core sample.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Lead specialist
Haematologist
Typical site
Back of the pelvic bone
Sample types
Liquid aspirate and core biopsy

What happens during the procedure

The haematologist takes samples, usually from the back of the pelvic bone, after cleaning and numbing the skin. The aspirate is liquid marrow; the trephine is a small core of bone and marrow. Laboratory teams examine the material for changes in blood-forming cells, and may perform specialised tests. Your haematologist combines those findings with symptoms, examination and blood-test results.

How to prepare

Tell the haematology team about blood thinners, bleeding conditions, allergies, pregnancy possibility and medicines that affect pain or anxiety. Ask whether you need a companion, how to care for the dressing and when you can return to work or exercise. Confirm when results may be ready and who will explain them, because different parts of the report can arrive at different times.

When to seek help

Keep the site clean and follow the team's instructions. Contact the service for bleeding that continues, increasing swelling, spreading redness, drainage, fever or pain that becomes stronger rather than settling. Seek urgent help for fainting, severe weakness, breathing difficulty or uncontrolled bleeding. Mention any medicines that may increase bleeding when you call.

Questions for your doctor

Will a haematologist perform my biopsy? Which samples will be taken? How will pain relief be provided? When will the initial and specialised results be available? What activity restrictions apply afterward?

Questions people ask

Is a bone marrow biopsy the same as a blood test?

No. A blood test examines circulating blood, while a marrow biopsy samples the blood-forming tissue inside bone.

Who explains the biopsy result?

The haematologist usually reviews the laboratory report with you and relates it to your other findings.
