Which specialist performs blood transfusion support?

The haematologist reviews blood counts, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment to decide whether red cells, platelets or another component may be needed. The laboratory identifies compatible blood and performs required checks. A nurse confirms your identity and observations, starts the transfusion and watches for changes. The medical team records the response and plans further monitoring or treatment of the underlying cause.

Tell the team about previous transfusions, reactions, allergies, pregnancy history and any new illness. Ask which blood component is planned, why it is recommended, how long the visit may take and which symptoms to report. Keep your identification details available and follow instructions about medicines, food and fluids for the appointment.

Tell the nurse immediately if you develop itching, rash, flushing, fever, chills, back pain, chest discomfort, breathlessness, dizziness or a feeling that something is wrong during the transfusion. After leaving, contact the service urgently for worsening symptoms, dark urine, yellowing of the skin, persistent fever or unusual bleeding. Use emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, collapse or chest pain.
