Which specialist performs an arthrogram?

An arthrogram examines a joint after a small amount of contrast material is placed inside it. The radiologist uses imaging guidance to position the needle accurately, then the joint is examined with X-ray, MRI, or another appropriate scan. The imaging specialist interprets the study and sends a report to the doctor who requested it.

The referring clinician may be an orthopaedic surgeon, sports-medicine doctor, or another specialist investigating pain, instability, cartilage damage, or a suspected tear. The radiologist performing the injection is responsible for explaining the procedure, checking relevant allergies and medicines, and answering questions about preparation.

Tell the imaging centre about pregnancy or possible pregnancy, allergies, bleeding problems, blood-thinning medicines, infection near the joint, and implanted devices. Follow the centre’s instructions about eating, drinking, and medication. Wear clothing that allows access to the joint and arrange help if pain or restricted movement may make travel difficult. Ask when and how the report will reach the referring doctor.

Contact the imaging service if you develop increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever, or worsening pain after the injection. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, facial swelling, faintness, or rapidly spreading symptoms after contrast exposure. Mild soreness can occur, but symptoms that escalate rather than settle need medical advice.

Ask why an arthrogram is recommended, which joint and scan will be used, how to prepare, and when normal activity may resume. Confirm what result the test is intended to clarify and who will explain the findings.
