An anomaly scan, also called a mid-trimester or 20-week scan, is a detailed ultrasound examination of the baby and pregnancy structures. The person scanning you checks the views needed for the service's assessment and may take measurements and images. If a view is unclear or a finding needs specialist interpretation, a maternal-fetal medicine doctor may review the scan or perform additional assessment. A scan can provide useful information without answering every pregnancy question.

Check the appointment instructions because preparation can vary with the service and stage of pregnancy. Wear clothing that allows access to your abdomen, bring your maternity notes if requested, and tell the team about earlier scan findings or concerns.
