The visit usually starts with your medical history, current medicines, family history and any symptoms or lifestyle concerns. The clinician may check vital signs and examine areas guided by your history. Screening tests are selected when they are relevant rather than automatically ordering every possible test. A family-medicine doctor offers broad ongoing care; an internal-medicine doctor can assess complex adult health concerns and arrange another specialty when needed.

Bring a list of medicines, allergies, previous diagnoses and recent test results, plus questions you want answered. Mention changes in sleep, mood, weight, exercise, digestion or menstrual health even if they seem unrelated. Ask which screening checks fit your personal history and whether any test requires fasting or other preparation.

An annual check is for planned care, not sudden illness. Seek urgent help for severe chest pain, major breathing difficulty, fainting, new one-sided weakness, a seizure, or sudden confusion. Arrange an earlier clinical appointment for persistent pain, unexplained bleeding, a changing mole, ongoing fever or a new symptom that is getting worse.
