Short answer

A haematologist with specialist training in blood cancers and stem cell transplantation usually leads an allogeneic stem cell transplant, supported by a dedicated transplant team.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Lead specialist
A transplant-trained haematologist.
Donor source
Stem cells come from another person.
Team care
Nurses, pharmacists and other specialists support the transplant pathway.

What the specialist does

The transplant haematologist assesses whether transplant is suitable, coordinates donor and conditioning plans, and oversees infusion and follow-up. Allogeneic means the blood-forming stem cells come from a donor. The team also watches for infection, graft-versus-host disease, organ effects and changes in blood counts.

How to prepare

Ask which haematologist will lead your care and where the transplant unit is located. Discuss donor testing, conditioning, fertility, medicines, vaccinations, central-line care and the expected monitoring schedule. A transplant nurse, pharmacist, dietitian and other specialists may be involved before and after the procedure.

When to contact the team

After transplant, contact the transplant unit urgently for fever, chills, new rash, diarrhoea, vomiting, breathlessness, bleeding, confusion or reduced urine. Follow the unit's instructions about emergency contact because infections and other complications can develop quickly when immunity is low.

Questions for your doctor

Are you a transplant haematologist? Who will make decisions when you are unavailable? Which team members will I meet? How can I reach the unit day and night? What symptoms require immediate assessment?

Questions people ask

Does one doctor perform the whole transplant alone?

No. A haematologist leads the transplant, while a multidisciplinary team provides monitoring, medicines, nursing and supportive care.

What is the specialist called?

The lead doctor is usually a haematologist specialising in stem cell transplantation or blood cancers.
