Which specialist performs abscess drainage?

An abscess is a pocket of infected material under the skin or within the body. The clinician first examines its size, depth, location and effect on nearby structures. A small, accessible skin abscess may be managed in a primary-care or minor-procedure setting. A collection near the eye, genitals, anus, hand or major blood vessels may need specialist planning. Abscesses that are deep, recurrent, spreading or associated with significant illness may be referred to general surgery or hospital care. Drainage may be combined with other treatment when examination suggests it is needed.

Arrange a clinical assessment rather than squeezing, cutting or repeatedly pressing the swelling at home. Keep the area clean and covered if it is leaking, wash your hands after touching it, and tell the clinician about allergies, diabetes, immune problems and medicines that affect bleeding. Seek urgent medical help if redness is rapidly spreading, pain is severe, fever or chills develop, the swelling is close to the eye, or you feel faint or very unwell. Prompt assessment is also needed if drainage is blocked, the wound smells strongly, or symptoms return after treatment. Do not delay care for a rapidly worsening infection.
