Where does a sprained wrist hurt?

Short answer

A sprained wrist usually hurts around the wrist joint, often on the palm or back of the wrist and near the injured ligament.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common location
Around the wrist joint, on the palm or back, or along one side
Movement triggers
Bending, twisting, pushing, and gripping

What the pain can feel like

Pain may be sore, sharp, or aching. It can become stronger when you bend the wrist, turn the forearm, push up from a chair, open a jar, or grip an object. Tenderness may be easiest to find by pressing along one side of the joint. Swelling or bruising can make the area feel tight, while movement may feel stiff. Pain at the thumb side, little-finger side, or centre of the wrist can reflect which ligament or nearby tissue was strained, but location alone cannot confirm a sprain.

A fall onto an outstretched hand can also injure a bone or cause another wrist problem. Persistent pain in one small area, marked tenderness, or difficulty using the hand deserves an examination rather than self-diagnosis.

What to do at home

Rest the wrist from lifting and painful twisting. A cold pack wrapped in cloth may help swelling for short periods. Keep the hand raised when practical, and use a comfortable support if it limits painful movement without making the fingers numb or unusually pale. Do not wrap it so tightly that circulation is affected. Gentle finger movement can reduce stiffness, but stop if wrist pain increases. A clinician or physiotherapist can guide safe recovery; see [Wrist Pain](/symptoms/wrist-pain/) and [Splinting](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/splinting/) for related information.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt medical assessment after a significant fall, a visible deformity, severe swelling, worsening pain, or inability to move the wrist or fingers. Seek urgent help if the hand becomes cold, blue, numb, or weak, or if an open wound is present. Pain that does not steadily improve, returns when normal activity resumes, or prevents sleep should also be assessed because a fracture or tendon injury can resemble a sprain.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which tissue appears injured, whether an X-ray or other test is needed, how long to use support, and when wrist movement or strengthening should begin. Ask which activities to avoid and what signs would mean you should return sooner.

Questions people ask

Can a sprained wrist hurt near the thumb?

Yes. Pain can be felt on the thumb side when tissues there are strained, but ongoing focal tenderness should be checked to exclude a bone injury.

Can I move a sprained wrist?

Some movement may be possible, but avoid actions that increase pain and arrange assessment if use is difficult or symptoms worsen.
