When will breakthrough bleeding stop?

Breakthrough bleeding is spotting or bleeding between expected periods. It can occur after starting, changing, missing, or inconsistently using hormonal contraception. The pattern may also be affected by an intrauterine device, pregnancy, cervical irritation, or an infection. Bleeding that continues, returns after settling, or begins without an obvious explanation needs assessment.

A clinician may ask about contraception, missed doses, pregnancy possibility, pain, discharge, and sexual health. Chlamydia can cause bleeding between periods or after sex, while Endometrial Polyps can contribute to irregular bleeding. These are possibilities to assess, not conclusions based on bleeding alone.

Track the days, amount, colour, triggers, missed contraception, and associated pain. Take contraception exactly as prescribed and follow the product instructions if a dose was missed; do not double doses unless advised. Consider a pregnancy test when pregnancy is possible, particularly after missed contraception. Arrange a routine appointment if the bleeding persists or interferes with daily life.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, faintness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy. Bleeding after sex that keeps recurring, new bleeding after menopause, or bleeding with unusual discharge also warrants prompt review.
