When to Worry About Weakness on One Side With Stroke

Weakness on One Side is a very common presentation of Stroke. A stroke can interrupt blood flow or cause bleeding in part of the brain. Because different brain areas control movement, speech, vision, balance, and sensation, symptoms can appear on one side of the body and may affect the face, arm, or leg. The change may be mild, such as a clumsy hand, or severe enough to make standing difficult. Symptoms can sometimes improve briefly, but that does not make them safe to ignore. Other conditions can also cause one-sided weakness, so an urgent assessment is needed to identify the cause.

Call emergency services as soon as the symptoms begin or are discovered. Note the time the person was last known to be well, or the time the weakness was first noticed. Keep them seated or lying safely, loosen tight clothing, and stay with them. Do not give food, drink, or medicines unless an emergency professional tells you to, because swallowing may be affected. Do not drive the person yourself if emergency transport is available; the responding team can begin assessment on the way.

Treat any new, sudden, or worsening one-sided weakness as an emergency, even if it disappears before help arrives. Seek immediate help if there is also an uneven smile, difficulty speaking or understanding, new numbness, loss of balance, trouble seeing, fainting, or an unusually severe headache. Do not wait for a routine appointment or try to monitor the symptoms at home. If the person becomes unresponsive or is not breathing normally, tell emergency services immediately and follow their instructions.

Ask what caused the weakness and which tests were used to investigate it. Clarify whether the symptoms could recur, which warning signs require another emergency call, and whether any prescribed medicine should be taken at a particular time. Ask when it is safe to walk, work, drive, or exercise, and whether you need support from physiotherapy, occupational therapy, or speech and language therapy. Share the exact onset, changes over time, and any medicines already taken.
