When to worry about one-sided weakness with Bell's palsy

Weakness on One Side is a common presentation of Bell's Palsy. Bell's palsy typically affects one side of the face, causing a drooping mouth, difficulty closing one eye, altered taste, or reduced facial movement. Weakness in an arm or leg, facial drooping with speech trouble, new vision loss, severe headache, loss of balance, or confusion is not something to attribute to Bell's palsy without urgent assessment.

Note the time the weakness began and whether it is changing. Do not drive if sudden neurological symptoms are present; call emergency services and keep the person supervised. If an eye cannot close, protect it from wind and dust and use only eye care recommended by a clinician. Do not delay emergency assessment while waiting for facial symptoms to improve.

Call emergency services immediately for new weakness of an arm or leg, trouble speaking or understanding, confusion, collapse, a severe sudden headache, new vision problems, or difficulty walking. Arrange prompt clinical review for a new facial droop, inability to close the eye, ear pain, or symptoms that are worsening. A clinician can distinguish facial nerve weakness from other causes.

Ask whether the weakness is limited to the face, how to protect the affected eye, which symptoms should trigger emergency help, and when follow-up is needed if movement does not begin to return.
