When to worry about vomiting with motion sickness

Short answer
Vomiting from motion sickness usually settles after movement stops, but urgent care is needed for severe dehydration or unusual symptoms.

Why motion causes vomiting
Vomiting is a very common presentation of Motion Sickness. It happens when the brain receives conflicting signals from the inner ear, eyes, and body about movement. Nausea, cold sweating, pallor, dizziness, and headache can accompany it. Symptoms often improve when the journey ends, but persistent vomiting may have another cause or may leave you dehydrated.
During a journey
Stop the journey or move to a stable position when possible. Look at a distant fixed point, keep your head still, and get fresh air. Sip water or an oral rehydration drink rather than taking large mouthfuls. Once settled, eat light foods if wanted. Ask a pharmacist about travel-sickness medicine before future journeys, including safety for children, pregnancy, and people taking other medicines.
When vomiting is not typical
Get urgent help if you cannot keep fluids down, feel faint, are confused, pass very little urine, or have severe weakness. Seek immediate assessment for chest pain, severe abdominal pain, a severe headache, fever with a stiff neck, blood or green material in vomit, or symptoms that continue well after movement has stopped.
Useful questions
Ask how to prevent symptoms on your type of journey, which medicine is appropriate for you, how to replace fluids, and what ongoing symptoms should be checked for another cause.
