Why vomiting matters

Heat stroke occurs when the body cannot control its temperature after intense heat exposure or exertion. Vomiting may occur with a very hot body, headache, dizziness, weakness, confusion, unusual behaviour, seizures, or loss of consciousness. A person may sweat heavily, lightly, or not at all, so sweating does not rule it out.

This is different from mild heat discomfort because the brain and other organs can be affected. Do not wait for the person to improve or rely on drinking alone when confusion, collapse, or severe symptoms are present.

Act while help is coming

Call emergency services immediately. Move the person to shade or a cool indoor place, remove excess clothing, and cool the skin with cool wet cloths, fanning, or a cool shower if safe. Stay with them and monitor breathing. Do not give drinks to someone who is confused, drowsy, having seizures, or unable to swallow safely.

When to seek care

Vomiting after significant heat exposure needs urgent assessment when it occurs with confusion, fainting, severe weakness, a very hot body, seizure, trouble breathing, or a severe headache. Treat suspected heat stroke as an emergency even if the person briefly seems better. Do not let them drive themselves to care.
