When to worry about vision changes in pregnancy with pre-eclampsia

Pre-eclampsia involves high blood pressure and possible effects on organs during pregnancy or after birth. Vision changes may feel like blurred or double vision, flashing lights, spots, or a dark area in your field of view. A severe headache, pain under the ribs, sudden swelling, nausea, vomiting, breathlessness, or feeling unwell adds concern. Symptoms can be present without a previous diagnosis, and they may continue to matter after delivery.

Contact your maternity team or an emergency service immediately for new visual symptoms. Do not drive if your sight is affected. Rest while waiting for help, take your prescribed blood-pressure medicine as directed, and bring your pregnancy records or medicine list if this does not delay care. Do not wait for a routine appointment or rely on a home reading to decide whether the symptom matters.

Call emergency services for severe or persistent vision changes, severe headache, seizure, fainting, confusion, chest pain, breathlessness, severe upper-abdominal pain, or heavy bleeding. Seek urgent assessment even if symptoms briefly disappear. Pre-eclampsia can worsen quickly, and a clinician may need to check blood pressure, urine, blood tests, and the baby’s wellbeing.

Ask what your blood-pressure readings mean, which medicines are safe for you, how your baby will be monitored, and which symptoms require a direct call. Before going home, confirm the follow-up plan and where to return if vision changes or headache recur.
