When to worry about visible deformity after an elbow injury

Short answer
Visible Deformity After Injury is a common presentation of Elbow Dislocation. Seek urgent medical assessment, especially if the arm looks out of place, cannot move normally, or the hand becomes numb, cold, pale, or weak.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main concern
- Dislocation, fracture, or nerve and blood-vessel injury
- Do not do
- Do not force the elbow straight or attempt a reduction
- Urgent signs
- Cold, pale, numb, or weak fingers
What the deformity may mean
An elbow dislocation changes the normal alignment of the upper arm and forearm bones. The joint may look bent, uneven, or visibly displaced, with swelling and marked pain. A fracture can occur at the same time, so appearance alone cannot show how much damage has occurred. Nerve or blood-vessel irritation may cause tingling, loss of feeling, unusual hand colour, or reduced temperature in the fingers.
What to do now
Keep the arm still in the position you found it and support it with a sling or folded cloth if this does not force the joint to move. Remove rings, watches, and bracelets before swelling increases. Do not try to straighten the elbow or put it back into place. Arrange urgent evaluation and avoid food or drink if emergency treatment may be needed, unless a clinician advises otherwise.
When to seek urgent care
Call emergency services or go to an emergency department for an obvious deformity, severe or increasing pain, rapidly worsening swelling, an open wound, heavy bleeding, or inability to move the fingers. Treat numbness, pins and needles, a cold hand, pale or bluish fingers, or a weak pulse as urgent warning signs because circulation or nerves may be affected. Even if the elbow seems to slip back into place, prompt assessment is still needed.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether imaging is needed to check for a fracture, whether the nerves and circulation in your hand are intact, and how long the joint should be protected. Clarify when gentle movement can begin, which activities to avoid, and which symptoms should bring you back sooner.

Questions people ask
Should I try to straighten a visibly bent elbow?
No. Keep it supported in its current position and seek urgent medical care.
What if the elbow looks normal again?
A joint that moves back can still have a fracture, swelling, or soft-tissue injury, so arrange prompt assessment.
