When to worry about vertigo with a middle ear infection

A middle ear infection can disturb pressure and nearby balance pathways, leaving you dizzy or unsteady. Most people with Middle Ear Infection notice vertigo when balance tissues are irritated, although the strength and duration of symptoms vary. Ear pain, reduced hearing, fever, or discharge may occur as well. A clinician can examine the ear and decide whether the dizziness fits the infection or needs another explanation.

Rest in a secure place when spinning starts, rise slowly, and use a handrail or another person for support. Avoid driving, heights, and machinery while dizzy. Keep track of ear pain, temperature, hearing, discharge, vomiting, and whether the vertigo is improving. Arrange medical advice if symptoms are worsening, persistent, or interfering with walking, eating, drinking, or sleep.

Seek emergency help for facial weakness, new trouble speaking, one-sided weakness, confusion, fainting, severe sudden headache, or new double vision. Get prompt care if you cannot walk safely, vomit repeatedly, develop swelling or severe pain behind the ear, or become rapidly more unwell. These warning signs need assessment beyond routine ear-infection care.
