When to worry about vaginal discharge with vaginal thrush

Thrush often causes a thick, white discharge with itching, soreness, or stinging. It does not usually have a strong unpleasant smell. Changes in colour or odour can point to another vaginal infection, while bleeding may have a different cause. Discharge can also vary with the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, sexual activity, or irritation from products, so appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice the colour, texture, smell, and timing of the discharge, along with itching, burning, pain, or urinary symptoms. Avoid douching and scented washes, which can irritate the area. Use thrush treatment only as directed and seek advice if this is your first episode, symptoms keep returning, or treatment does not help. A clinician may examine you or test a sample to choose the right treatment.

Seek prompt medical care for fever, worsening lower abdominal or pelvic pain, feeling faint, heavy bleeding, or severe swelling and pain. Arrange a routine appointment for a new unusual discharge, a strong odour, green or yellow discharge, bleeding after sex, or symptoms that persist. If you are pregnant, have a weakened immune system, or have diabetes, ask a clinician for advice before self-treating.

Ask whether the discharge pattern fits thrush or another infection, whether testing is needed, which treatment is suitable, and what symptoms should prompt a review. Mention recent antibiotics, pregnancy possibility, new products, sexual exposure, or repeated episodes because these details can change the assessment.
