What cervical ectropion can mean

Cervical ectropion happens when the softer cells from inside the cervical canal are visible on the outer surface of the cervix. These cells can produce mucus, so discharge may be more noticeable. The discharge may be clear or white and may vary with hormonal changes. Some people also notice light bleeding after sex or after a cervical examination because the area can be more delicate.

Ectropion does not explain every type of discharge. An unpleasant smell, green or grey colour, a thick or clumpy texture, soreness, or marked itching can point to infection or another cause that needs assessment.

Notice the discharge’s colour, smell, texture, and timing, and record any bleeding, pelvic discomfort, itching, or urinary symptoms. Avoid douching and fragranced products, which can irritate the vaginal area. Arrange an appointment if the change persists, returns, or is troubling you; a clinician may ask about symptoms and decide whether an examination or swab is needed.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical advice for discharge with pelvic or lower abdominal pain, fever, pain during sex, burning when passing urine, or bleeding that is unexpected, heavy, or occurs after sex. Seek urgent care if you feel severely unwell, faint, or have severe pain. These symptoms can have causes other than cervical ectropion and should not be self-diagnosed from discharge alone.
