When to worry about urinary urgency with prostatitis

Prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate, sometimes linked with infection. Irritation around the prostate and bladder can create a strong need to urinate, frequent trips to the toilet, burning, weak flow, or discomfort in the pelvis. Most people with prostatitis notice urinary urgency, yet urgency alone cannot show which condition is responsible. A clinician may consider your symptoms, examine you, and arrange urine testing when appropriate.

Arrange medical advice if urgency is new, persistent, worsening, or accompanied by painful urination, pelvic pain, blood in the urine, or difficulty starting the stream. Until assessed, note when symptoms began, how often you urinate, whether the stream has changed, and any medicines or recent procedures. Drink normally unless a clinician has advised a fluid restriction, and avoid taking leftover antibiotics because the choice of treatment depends on the cause.

Seek urgent medical care if you are unable to pass urine, have fever or chills with urinary symptoms, develop severe lower abdominal or back pain, vomit repeatedly, become confused, or feel faint and markedly unwell. These features can signal a more serious urinary problem or infection requiring prompt treatment. If symptoms are uncomfortable but none of these warning signs are present, contact a doctor soon for assessment rather than waiting for them to settle.
