When to worry about urinary incontinence with benign prostatic hyperplasia

Urinary Incontinence is a common presentation of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. As the prostate enlarges, it can narrow the urine channel and make the bladder work harder. Leakage may happen as urgency, dribbling after urination, or overflow when the bladder does not empty fully.

New leakage should not automatically be attributed to the prostate. Urine infection, constipation, medicines, bladder problems, nerve conditions, and other causes can produce similar symptoms. Describe whether the leakage follows a strong urge, occurs during sleep, happens after passing urine, or is accompanied by a weak stream, straining, or frequent nighttime urination.

Book a clinician appointment if leakage is new, increasing, bothersome, or associated with a change in stream. Keep a brief bladder diary showing drinks, urination times, urgency, leakage episodes, nighttime waking, and any pain. Mention all prescription medicines, non-prescription products, and supplements.

A clinician may check your abdomen, urine, prostate-related symptoms, and bladder emptying. Treatment depends on the cause and can include changes to fluids or bladder habits, pelvic-floor guidance, medicines, or another approach. Avoid reducing fluids severely, because concentrated urine can irritate the bladder and dehydration can make you unwell.

Seek urgent care if you cannot pass urine, develop severe lower abdominal pain or swelling, or become confused or very unwell. Acute retention can overstretch the bladder and needs prompt treatment.

Get same-day medical advice for fever or chills with urinary symptoms, burning pain, flank or back pain, visible blood in the urine, or sudden worsening leakage. These features may indicate infection or another problem needing assessment. Repeated infections, worsening weakness, or new leg numbness also warrant prompt review.

Ask whether the leakage pattern suggests urgency, overflow, or another cause; whether your bladder is emptying; and whether a urine test or medication review is needed. Ask which changes should prompt urgent help, how to protect your skin, and whether pelvic-floor or bladder-training support would suit you.
