When to worry about trouble getting pregnant with anovulation

Anovulation means an ovary does not release an egg during a cycle. Without an egg, sperm cannot fertilise an egg that cycle, so irregular or missing periods can make fertile timing difficult. Anovulation can have different causes, including hormonal conditions, changes in weight, intense exercise, stress, or other health problems. Trouble conceiving does not by itself identify the cause.

Track bleeding patterns, cycle timing, symptoms, medicines, and any home ovulation-test results. A clinician may review your history, check for pregnancy, and use hormone testing or ultrasound to assess ovulation and reproductive organs. Bring information about both partners, because fertility can involve either partner. Treatment depends on the cause and may include addressing an underlying condition or using ovulation-focused treatment.

Seek a fertility assessment promptly for absent periods, very infrequent periods, milky nipple discharge unrelated to breastfeeding, new severe headaches or vision changes, or troublesome pelvic pain. Seek urgent care for severe pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding.

Ask what may be preventing ovulation, which tests can confirm it, whether medicines or health conditions contribute, and when treatment should begin. Ask how often follow-up is needed and what symptoms should trigger urgent help.
