When to worry about swollen glands with mumps

Mumps commonly causes painful swelling around the cheeks and jaw because salivary glands become inflamed; lymph nodes may also feel enlarged. Fever, headache, tiredness and discomfort when chewing can occur. A diagnosis cannot be made from swollen glands alone, because several infections can cause similar changes.

If mumps is possible, call ahead before visiting a healthcare setting and avoid sharing cups, utensils or towels. Limit close contact as advised by a clinician.

Offer fluids and soft foods if chewing hurts. Rest and use an age-appropriate pain or fever medicine only as directed on its label or by a clinician. Do not massage a painful swelling forcefully.

Contact a clinician if swelling is increasing, eating or drinking is difficult, or symptoms are not following the expected course. Mention any recent exposure and vaccination history.

Seek urgent help for severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, seizure, repeated vomiting, fainting, trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids or signs of dehydration. New severe abdominal or testicular pain also needs immediate medical assessment.

Ask how mumps should be confirmed, how long close contact should be avoided, what pain relief is suitable, and which symptoms could signal a complication. Ask when the person can safely return to school or work.
