When to worry about swollen glands with a common cold

A cold can activate lymph nodes near the nose, throat, or ears, making them feel tender while the immune system responds. They may be more noticeable on one side if symptoms are stronger there. Glands that are hard, fixed, painless, growing, or located above the collarbone are less typical and should be checked rather than assumed to be part of a cold.

Rest, drink fluids, and use suitable pain relief if you normally can take it. Avoid repeatedly pressing the glands because this can make the area sore. Note their location, tenderness, and whether they are changing as the cold improves. Arrange a routine appointment if they remain enlarged after the respiratory symptoms settle, keep returning, or are affecting swallowing or neck movement.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, drooling, severe neck swelling, confusion, or a rapidly worsening illness. Arrange prompt assessment for high fever that persists, marked weakness, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or a gland that is hard, fixed, painless, or steadily enlarging. A clinician can examine the area and decide whether further checks are needed.

Ask whether the location and feel of the glands fit a recent infection, how long to monitor them, and what changes should bring you back. Mention dental symptoms, sore throat, skin infections, medicines, and any recent contact with an illness.
