When to worry about sun sensitivity with cutaneous lupus

Ultraviolet light can trigger or worsen cutaneous lupus lesions, including red or scaly patches, plaques, sores, or changes in skin colour. Reactions may appear after outdoor exposure and can last beyond the day of exposure. Sun sensitivity can also affect areas exposed through windows or during brief activities, so pattern and timing are useful details for diagnosis.

Seek shade, use closely woven clothing and a broad-brimmed hat, and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen if your clinician recommends one. Reapply it as directed and avoid deliberate tanning. Continue prescribed lupus treatment unless your clinician tells you otherwise. Photograph new lesions in good light and record exposures, products, and symptoms.

Arrange review if lesions spread, become painful, crusted, ulcerated, or do not settle after avoiding light, or if treatment no longer controls them. Seek prompt medical advice for new mouth or nose sores, unusual hair shedding, joint swelling, chest pain, shortness of breath, marked swelling, or profound fatigue, because these symptoms may need assessment beyond the skin.
