When to worry about spreading redness with cellulitis

Cellulitis is an infection in deeper skin and nearby tissue. The affected area may feel warm, tender, swollen, or tight, and its edge can extend beyond where it started. Mark the border gently and note the time so a clinician can judge change. Red streaks, increasing pain, pus, or a new blister can indicate that the infection is progressing.

Arrange prompt medical care rather than waiting for the redness to settle on its own. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or puncturing it, and elevate an affected arm or leg when practical. Drink fluids if you can, follow prescribed treatment exactly, and do not share leftover antibiotics. Take a clear photo beside the marked border to show how the area changes.

Seek urgent help if redness is spreading quickly, pain is severe or out of proportion, the skin becomes dusky or blistered, or you develop feverishness, chills, confusion, faintness, vomiting, or unusual weakness. Emergency assessment is especially important when the face, area around an eye, hand, genitals, or a large wound is involved. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or confused.

Ask whether the infection needs oral or injected treatment, how soon the border should stop expanding, and which changes should trigger reassessment. Mention recent wounds, bites, surgery, swelling, diabetes, immune problems, allergies, and every medicine you take.
