When to worry about snoring with obstructive sleep apnoea

Short answer
Snoring is a very common presentation of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, but breathing pauses, choking, severe daytime sleepiness or worsening symptoms need medical review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Key concern
- Breathing pauses, choking or marked daytime sleepiness
- Useful observer
- A bed partner can describe pauses and gasping
What the snoring can mean
Obstructive sleep apnoea happens when the upper airway narrows or closes repeatedly during sleep. Snoring can become loud or irregular as air moves through the narrowed passage. A bed partner may notice quiet pauses followed by a gasp, snort or choking sound. You may wake with a dry mouth or headache, while poor-quality sleep can leave you tired, irritable or unfocused during the day.
What you can do next
Arrange a medical assessment if someone observes repeated breathing pauses, or if snoring is accompanied by unrefreshing sleep or daytime sleepiness. Share a sleep history with the clinician, including night-time noises, awakenings, medicines and alcohol use. A sleep study may measure breathing, oxygen levels and sleep patterns. Until assessed, avoid driving or operating machinery when you feel drowsy.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty while awake, blue or grey lips, chest pain, fainting, confusion or inability to stay awake. Contact a clinician promptly when witnessed pauses recur, choking repeatedly wakes you, or sleepiness interferes with work, driving or routine activities. Snoring alone is not an emergency, but a change in its pattern deserves attention.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms suggest a sleep study, how to make nights safer while waiting, and which medicines or habits may worsen airway narrowing. Ask how to recognise excessive sleepiness and when treatment should be reviewed.
