When to worry about sneezing with a common cold

A common cold irritates the lining of the nose and throat. Sneezing may occur with a runny or blocked nose, sore throat, cough, tiredness, and a mild temperature. Symptoms often change as the illness settles. Allergies can also cause sneezing, particularly when there is nasal or eye itching without feeling generally unwell. The pattern, associated symptoms, and contact with illness help a clinician consider the cause.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and use saline drops or a saline rinse to ease nasal irritation. Warm drinks and humidified air may feel soothing. Ask a pharmacist about suitable pain or fever relief, especially if you are pregnant, have a long-term condition, or take regular medicines. Wash hands, cover coughs and sneezes, and avoid sharing towels or cups while unwell.

Contact a clinician if breathing becomes difficult, you cannot keep fluids down, you become unusually drowsy, or symptoms are worsening rather than settling. Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathing trouble, blue or grey lips, confusion, or collapse. Medical advice is also sensible when symptoms are unusually severe, keep returning, or affect someone very young, older, pregnant, or living with a condition that weakens immunity.
