When to worry about sneezing with allergic rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis happens when the nose reacts to triggers such as pollen, dust mites, mould, or animal dander. Sneezing often comes in bursts and may occur with an itchy nose, watery or blocked nose, and itchy, watery eyes. Symptoms may follow exposure and improve when the trigger is avoided. Fever, marked body aches, facial pain, or thick discharge can point to another problem and deserve clinical advice if they are persistent or severe.

Reduce exposure to the trigger where practical, keep windows closed during high-pollen periods, and rinse the nose with a suitable saline solution. A pharmacist or clinician can explain whether an antihistamine or nasal steroid is appropriate and how to use it correctly. Nasal sprays work best with consistent technique; spraying towards the outer wall of the nostril can reduce irritation. Avoid using decongestant nasal sprays for longer than the product instructions.

Arrange a medical review if sneezing is persistent, repeatedly interrupts sleep, affects work or school, or comes with wheezing, recurrent nosebleeds, reduced smell, or symptoms that are difficult to control. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble breathing, faintness, or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction. These signs need immediate attention rather than routine allergy care.
