When to worry about a skin ulcer with stasis dermatitis

Stasis dermatitis is linked with poor return of blood from the lower legs. Swelling and inflamed, fragile skin can make a break in the skin slow to close. An ulcer may occur around the lower leg or ankle and can be accompanied by weeping, scaling, discolouration, or itching.

Use the wound dressing and compression plan prescribed for you; compression is not suitable for everyone and should be checked by a clinician. Elevate the leg when resting if advised, moisturise intact surrounding skin, and avoid scratching or tight footwear. Do not put moisturiser directly into an open wound unless instructed.

Arrange review if the ulcer is not improving, becomes deeper, develops increasing drainage or odour, or is surrounded by spreading redness and warmth. Seek urgent care for fever, severe or rapidly worsening pain, a cold or pale foot, new numbness, or bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure.

Ask whether your circulation and the wound need assessment, which dressing is appropriate, and whether compression is safe for you. Discuss swelling control, infection warning signs, and what to do if the ulcer changes between appointments.
