When to worry about a headache with a common cold

Arrange a medical assessment promptly if the pain is getting steadily worse, is unusual for you, or comes with a high fever, repeated vomiting, a new rash, or significant drowsiness. These features need assessment because they may point to an illness beyond an uncomplicated cold.

Headache is a common presentation of Common Cold. Nasal congestion can create pressure around the face, while poor sleep, reduced fluid intake, fever, coughing, and muscle tension can add to head pain. The headache may feel dull or pressure-like and can improve as congestion and other cold symptoms settle.

A cold-related headache is different from a diagnosis by itself. Notice where it hurts, whether bending forward changes the pressure, and whether it has a familiar pattern for you. A new, intense, or changing headache deserves more caution than a mild ache that follows your usual cold symptoms.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and eat light meals if you can. A cool or warm compress on the forehead, a quiet dim room, and saline nasal spray or steam from a warm shower may ease discomfort from congestion. Avoid very hot steam, which can burn the skin or airways.

If you use a pain reliever or a cold medicine, follow the label carefully. Some combination cold products already contain a pain reliever, so check ingredients before taking more than one product. A pharmacist can help you choose an option if you are pregnant, have a long-term condition, take regular medicines, or are treating a child.

Call emergency services now for a headache that starts abruptly and severely, or for headache with fainting, seizure, confusion, a stiff neck, new weakness or numbness, difficulty speaking, trouble walking, vision loss, or a severe head injury. Do not drive yourself if these symptoms are present.

Contact a clinician soon if head pain persists after the cold symptoms improve, becomes more frequent or more intense, prevents normal activities, or occurs with facial swelling, severe pain around the eyes, or fever that concerns you. Seek advice earlier for an infant, an older adult, or someone with a weakened immune system.

Describe when the headache began, where it is located, what makes it better or worse, and which cold symptoms came first. Ask whether your pattern suggests congestion-related pressure, whether any medicines you use could contribute, and what changes should prompt urgent review.
