When is thyroid removal surgery recommended for thyroid nodule?

Many thyroid nodules are assessed with an ultrasound, blood tests, and sometimes a fine-needle biopsy. Surgery is considered when results suggest cancer or cannot provide a clear answer, or when a large nodule presses on the windpipe or food pipe and causes swallowing, breathing, or voice problems.
