When is shoulder stabilisation surgery recommended for shoulder dislocation?

A dislocation can stretch or tear the labrum, capsule, and supporting ligaments, and may damage the bone around the socket or upper arm. Repeated episodes, a shoulder that slips during ordinary movement, or an injury pattern that makes recurrence more likely can prompt a surgical opinion. Examination and imaging help identify whether key stabilising tissues or bone need repair.

Write down each episode, what movement triggered it, and whether the shoulder went back in by itself or needed reduction. Discuss physiotherapy for rotator-cuff and shoulder-blade control, activity changes, and the findings on imaging. If surgery is selected, clarify sling use, exercise stages, return to work, and when overhead or contact activity can resume.

Get urgent care for a shoulder that appears out of place, severe pain after trauma, new numbness or weakness, or a hand that becomes pale, cold, or difficult to move. Do not try to force a dislocated shoulder back into position.

Ask what tissue or bone is injured, whether rehabilitation alone is reasonable, which stabilisation technique fits the findings, and how recurrence prevention will be managed afterward.
