When is polyp removal recommended for bowel polyps?

A polyp is a growth from the bowel lining. Some are harmless, while others can contain changes that need closer assessment. During colonoscopy, a clinician may remove a small or reachable polyp with a snare or another instrument. The tissue is sent for laboratory examination, which describes its type, size, and features. A large, flat, difficult-to-reach, or deeply attached polyp may need a different procedure or referral rather than immediate removal. The pathology result helps determine when another bowel examination is appropriate.

Follow the bowel-preparation and medicine instructions carefully, including advice about blood thinners or diabetes treatment. Tell the endoscopy team about previous reactions to sedation, heart or lung conditions, and allergies. Arrange transport if sedation is used. After removal, follow instructions about food, activity, and warning symptoms. Keep the appointment where the tissue result and future surveillance plan are explained; the next examination depends on the findings rather than the removal alone.

After polyp removal, seek urgent help for heavy or persistent rectal bleeding, severe or increasing abdominal pain, a hard or swollen abdomen, fever, dizziness, or fainting. Contact the endoscopy service promptly if you are unsure whether bleeding is expected or if you cannot keep fluids down. Before the procedure, urgent assessment is needed for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, or black stools.
