When is a liver function test recommended for hepatitis B?

The blood test measures markers linked with liver-cell irritation and bile handling. A result can change over time and does not, on its own, show whether hepatitis B is active or how much liver scarring exists. Clinicians interpret it with hepatitis B markers, viral testing, examination, medical history, and sometimes imaging.

If hepatitis B has been diagnosed, attend the monitoring appointments recommended by your clinician, even when you feel well. Bring details of medicines, supplements, alcohol use, and other health conditions. Do not start herbal or non-prescription products without checking first. Ask about protecting household and sexual contacts and about any additional tests needed to plan care.

Get urgent medical help for confusion, severe weakness, vomiting blood, black stools, a swollen abdomen, or new yellowing of the skin or eyes. These symptoms may signal significant liver distress and should not wait for a scheduled blood test.
