When is GP consultation recommended for threadworms?

Threadworms are small intestinal worms that can cause itching around the anus, often worse at night. Scratching can irritate the skin and spread eggs to fingers, clothing, bedding and household surfaces. Similar itching can have other causes, so a GP or pharmacist can help confirm the likely problem when the appearance or symptoms are unclear.

Wash hands carefully after using the toilet and before eating, keep fingernails short, shower in the morning, and change underwear and sleepwear regularly. Wash bedding and towels as advised and avoid shaking them. Tell the clinician who in the household has symptoms, what treatment has been used, and whether anyone is pregnant, very young or taking regular medicines.

Contact a GP promptly if itching is severe, the skin is broken or infected, sleep is repeatedly disturbed, or symptoms continue despite following treatment instructions. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, marked weakness, or signs of a serious allergic reaction after a medicine.

Ask how the diagnosis is checked, whether other household members need advice, how to reduce reinfection, when treatment should be repeated if recommended, and which products are suitable for each person at home.
