What Should You Know About Wheals Rash?

Wheals, also called hives, are swollen patches caused by temporary release of inflammatory chemicals in the skin. Individual welts often change shape, appear in new places or settle while others develop. A wheal rash can follow food, medicine, infection, heat, pressure or an insect sting, but the trigger is not always found.

A wheal is different from a rash with fixed scale, blisters or a ring-shaped edge. Those patterns can point toward conditions such as contact dermatitis, heat rash or ringworm and need a different approach.

Keep the skin cool, avoid hot showers and wear loose clothing. Note foods, medicines, activities and products used before each episode. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine is appropriate for you; do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. Avoid scratching, since broken skin can become infected.

Call emergency services immediately if wheals occur with swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing, faintness, confusion or repeated vomiting. Arrange medical review when episodes keep returning, last beyond a short period, leave bruising or involve fever, painful joints or a new medicine.
